National Night Out - August 5th, 2008

The National Association of Town Watch, the Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations (CONO), Dove Community Services, and the City of Decatur, will sponsor the 25th Annual National Night Out (NNO) on August 5th, 2008, beginning at 5:00 p.m. and ending at approximately

9:00 p.m.

NNO is a unique crime/drug prevention event held the first Tuesday in August throughout the country.  Over 11,000 cities around the U.S. will host block parties, cookouts, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth activities.  The NNO campaign involves local government officials, citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses and neighborhood organizations that will caravan to participating organized neighborhood events.

The kickoff will start with a BRIEF press conference at the

Civic

Center

at

5:00 p.m.

  The caravan will then proceed to various neighborhoods: Nelson Park (small pavilion by the pool), Galloway Park, Wabash Crossing Ray of Hope, (church lot/321 E. Leafland), GM Square at Monroe Park, Old King’s Orchard (OKO), ---Church & Green, and Neighborhood United (Lexington Apts./1221 N. Van Dyke);   This year’s celebration will have:  Patches and Pumper, cookouts, giveaways and drawings to celebrate the 25^th anniversary.  This year’s poster contest winner will also be riding in the caravan.  Residents throughout the city are asked to turn on their porch lights @ 8:00 p.m. and spend the evening talking and getting to know their neighbors.

¨      Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness

¨      Generate support for, participation in, local anti-crime partnerships

¨      Strengthen neighborhood spirit and community policing partnerships

¨      Send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back!
